Before Humeia, I co-authored Fostering Changes, a training manual for foster carers, developed while leading a team at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, King's College London. (IOPPN)
It was not judged by good intentions. It was tested by an independent randomised controlled trial, the same standard used to test whether a medical treatment actually works. The trial found the programme measurably reduced stress in foster carers. Not a felt sense of improvement. A measured one.
Fostering Changes went on to be used to support foster carers across England, with a national train-the-trainer rollout that upskilled more than five hundred professionals across 153 local authorities. It is now published in both English and German and used in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and across Europe.
That is the bar I hold Humeia to. Not whether it feels like it is working. Whether it is.
The Formation Method is not invented from scratch. It draws on decades of published research into how people actually regulate emotion, respond to pressure and make decisions, three questions at the centre of what Humeia is trying to build.
Selected grounding: Damasio, 1994; LeDoux, 1996; Arnsten, 2009.
The body registers a reaction before conscious thought catches up and that reaction is data, not a distraction to override.
Under pressure, the brain's fast alarm system can take charge before the slower, more deliberate part of the mind gets a say, which is exactly why a pause matters.
The part of the brain responsible for weighing options and exercising judgement is measurably impaired under stress, which is why practising the pause has to happen before the pressure, not during it.
Most apps measure whether you opened them. Humeia measures whether formation is actually happening, which is a different and harder question. Four principles govern how:
DAILY
Practice continunity
Value and habit trends
Formation outcomes
ANNUAL FORMATION
Review
Fostering Changes took years to earn its evidence. Humeia is at the beginning of the same road, not the end of it.
Longitudinal reporting is built into the Formation Companion from day one and the same standard that once applied to a training manual for foster carers now applies here: real outcomes over felt insights, evidence built over time, not claimed in advance.
